Here at Melwood, community partnerships are at the heart of what we do. That's why we're so grateful to our corporate sponsors who donated time, sweat, and energy to preparing Camp Accomplish for the 700 campers who will join us this summer! More than 90 volunteers from The Wills Group, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, BradyIFS, Now BradyPLUS, Shore United Bank, Silva Contracting, Children's National Hospital and Daycon Distributors helped us spread mulch, garden, paint, assemble first-aid kits, and rebuild the bridge to the pond!

For decades, Melwood has leveraged its vast experience to break down barriers and open opportunities for people with disabilities in the broader workforce. Today, Melwood, MITRE and the University of Washington released a new playbook called the Neurodiversity@Work Playbook: Federal Edition. This playbook is a first-of-its-kind recruiting, hiring, training and retention tool the federal government can use to become a more inclusive and accessible employer, opening the government’s recruitment pool to neurodivergent candidates who are often excluded from the current hiring process. As the largest employer in the United States, the federal government plays an outsized role in the economic well-being of the disability community. By creating a playbook that speaks to the nuances of federal agencies, we will be enabling more hiring managers to help address the under-inclusion of neurodivergent people in the workforce. This is especially important in our region, where the federal government has such a large presence. Melwood is pleased to support the creation of the Neurodiversity@Work Playbook: Federal Edition. This article from my colleague and CGI Cybersecurity expert Brigitte Custer really moved me. Brigitte discusses Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), her family’s personal experience with neurodiversity, and the opportunity for businesses to tap into this super high performing talent pool to address some of our most pressing talent needs specifically in the Cybersecurity domain. So proud of CGI's work through our Neurodiverse Resource Group (NRG), our partnership with Melwood, our STEM camps and apprenticeship programs to develop Cyber talent and most importantly, enable a work environment where NRG talent can flourish while delivering our client’s mission. Melwood is proud to support and empower other social enterprises that work to advance the economic freedoms of people with disabilities. We recently shared a day on Capitol Hill with ACHIEVE Human Services, Inc. where our two teams visited Congressional staff, shared our work to empower people with disabilities, introduced the Alliance for Expanding America's Workforce, and advocated for the modernization and expansion of the AbilityOne Program.

🚨 BREAKING: Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)'s Board of Directors just approved next year's budget, avoiding massive cuts to bus and rail service that would have disproportionally impacted workers with disabilities. Melwood's Chief Contract and Operations Officer KARL GRONINGER expressed grave concerns over WMATA's funding crisis and its impact on disabled workers earlier this year. We applaud WMATA for taking our concerns seriously and finding solutions that empower Melwood employees and other workers with disabilities to achieve financial independence. The federal Supplemental Security Insurance program was designed to help people with disabilities and help ensure the financial security of individuals who have limited income and access to resource. However, flaws within its structures trap people with disabilities in cycles of poverty and contribute to a reluctance to do away with outdated policies like subminimum wages for people with disabilities. Under the current program structure, people with disabilities are forced to grapple with taking a new job or promotion at the risk of losing critical benefits or choosing not to advance in their careers at all to maintain benefits and healthcare coverage that enables them to engage in their lives and communities. https://lnkd.in/eXqEXtmt #disability #disabilityemployment
